How to Create a Gantt Chart in Google Sheets

Below we have outlined the steps on how to create a Gantt chart in Google Sheets. We'll use a simple project example with tasks to demonstrate each step clearly.

1. Prepare the Worksheet

Create columns for: Task Name, Start Date, End Date, Start on Day, and Duration.

Format columns by going to the Format > Number:

Task Name: Plain text format

Start Date and End Date: Date format

Start on Day and Duration: Number format

2. Add Task Details

Enter the tasks with Start and End Dates. Assume the project starts on April 1, 2024.

Below are some examples:

3. Calculate "Start on Day"

Use =INT(B2)-INT($B$2) for the first task in the "Start on Day" column (D2).

Drag the formula down to fill the column for all tasks by clicking on the small blue circle at the bottom-right corner of the cell.

4. Calculate "Duration"

In the Duration column (E), use =C2-B2 for the first task.

Drag down to auto-fill for all tasks.

5. Create the Stacked Bar Chart

Highlight the data in columns A, D, and E.

Go to Insert > Chart.

Change the chart type to "Stacked Bar Chart" in the Chart Editor on the right.

6. Adjust the Chart for a Gantt Look

Click on the chart title and replace it with "Website Launch Project Timeline".

Click on the Start on Day series in the chart, then select "0%" fill opacity in the Series options to make them invisible.

In the Chart Editor, under "Customize", find "Legend", and select "None".

7. Customize Axis Titles and Intervals

Under "Customize", go to "Chart & axis titles" then click on the dropdown menu and select "Horizontal axis title" then set the title to "Day of the Month".

Go to "Vertical axis title" and delete the title.

Under "Gridlines and ticks", set the major step for the horizontal axis to 7 for weekly intervals.

8. Customize Taskbar Colors

Click on a task bar to select all, then click again on a single task. Choose your preferred color for each task in the "Series" section.
