Our drivers just like to hand write everything. We had 6 FTEs just processing driver tickets until we found Lido.
Check OCR goes by different names depending on who you ask: check reading, remittance capture, or OCR check processing. The job underneath is the same, turning stacks of paper checks into structured records. Accounts payable teams use it to log vendor payments, property managers digitize rent checks, and CPA firms reconcile client deposits without keying a number by hand. OCR for bank checks has to handle two alphabets at once: the magnetic MICR characters printed along the bottom edge and the handwriting everywhere else. Lido reads both from PDFs, scans, and photos, then sends the results to Excel, Google Sheets, CSV, or an API.
Frequently asked questions
What does check OCR software extract?
Every field on the check: payee, date, courtesy amount (the numbers in the box), legal amount (the written-out line), memo, and the MICR line with routing and account numbers. Each field comes back with a confidence score, so you review only the uncertain ones.
Can OCR read the amount of a check?
Yes, both versions of it. Lido reads the numeric amount in the box and the written amount on the line, and you can cross-check one against the other to catch errors. Handwritten amounts are the hard part, and that is exactly where Lido is strongest. As one Lido sales engineer says: "Lido has extracted things that I cannot read."
Do I need an OCR check scanner?
No. Dedicated check scanners exist for bank teller windows, but OCR check scanning in Lido works from any flatbed scan, phone photo, or PDF. Scan a whole stack into one file and Lido splits it into individual checks.
Does bank check OCR read handwritten fields?
Yes, and that matters because most checks are half printed, half handwritten: the MICR line is machine printed while the payee and amounts are filled in by hand. Lido reads both with 99%+ field-level accuracy. Business check OCR works the same way on printed voucher checks.
Does cheque OCR work outside the US?
Yes. Cheque OCR reads UK, Canadian, and Australian cheques the same way, along with any other country's format and language. There are no templates to configure, so a new layout works on the first upload.
