How to Filter by Color in Google Sheets (The Easy Way!)

In this article we will show you how to filter by color in Google Sheets in just a few simple clicks, either by the fill color or by the text color. Just follow the steps below!

Filter by Fill Color in Google Sheets 

1. Click any cell in the table

You can even select the whole table in this step; however, Google Sheets can automatically detect the bounds of your table. You will notice this when you do the next step.

2. Click Create a filter icon along the main toolbar

The icon is near the end of the main toolbar.

Inverted triangles, a symbol for the filter feature in Google Sheets, will appear on the cells of the header row or the first row.

3. Click the inverted triangle icon on the header cell of one of the columns with a fill color

A green box will appear when you hover your cursor over the icon.

4. Select Filter by color

A drop-down box will appear. Click Filter by color. Another drop-down box will appear afterwards.

5. Select the Fill Color to filter

Select Fill color, then select the color you want to filter. The names assigned by Google Sheets to each color will be set as the label for the color choices. For this example, we select light blue 3.

Only the light blue filled rows will remain:

Filter by Text Color in Google Sheets 

1. Click any cell in the table

You can even select the whole table in this step; however, Google Sheets can automatically detect the bounds of your table. You will notice this when you do the next step.

2. Click Create a filter icon along the main toolbar

The icon is near the end of the main toolbar.

3. Click the inverted triangle icon on the header cell of the column with the text color

4. Select Filter by color

A drop-down box will appear. Click Filter by color. Another drop-down box will appear afterwards.

5. Select the Text color to filter

Select Text color, then select the color you want to filter. The names assigned by Google Sheets to each color will be set as the label for the color choices. For this example, we select red berry.

Only the rows with red berry colored text will remain:
