It allows eligible individuals to renew an existing U.S. passport by mail without appearing in person.
You must have a passport issued when you were 16 or older, within the past 15 years and in your current name (or with documented name change).
Submit your most recent passport, a new passport photo, completed form and any legal documentation of a name change.
Send the completed form and supporting documents by mail to the address listed on the form; do not submit in person at a passport agency.
Routine service usually takes 6–8 weeks; expedited service is available for an additional fee and reduces the processing time.
You can track your application status online; your old passport will be returned and your new passport mailed once processed.
The passport book is valid for international air, land and sea travel. The passport card is less expensive but valid only for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean.
Contact the National Passport Information Center to update your mailing address so your new passport is delivered correctly.
